Mesothelioma is just another form of cancer in the lungs caused by exposure to asbestos. It is called "mesothelioma" because the cancer cells caused by asbestos fumes greatly damaged the outer linings of the lungs called "mesothelium". These fibers were acquired through breathing and were suspended in the tiny openings in the lungs or stick in mucous membranes.
There are three main types of this diasease. The highest one is pleural mesothelioma. It is called as pleural because the mesothelioma mainly affected the lining of the lungs. The incidence appeared for up to 75% for pleural mesothelioma. The other 20% of the case are peritoneal or pericardial. Peritoneal meosthelioma affects the abdomen whereas pericardial mesothelioma when it affects the heart.
The diagnosis of the disease can be done by x-rays and through scanning. A detailed check up of the patient is carried out to detect the growth of the cancer cells. Biopsy is the definite test for more accuracy as in this a tissue of the body is carefully studied with the help of microscope. Mesomark is a latest and unbeaten blood test for perfect diagnosis of this disease. Once the extent of the disease is confirmed the treatment can be started by the doctor.
